identification: Medium size, oblong conic and often irregular. The skin is glossy and yellow over which is a bright red wash and a pattern of red stripes on the sun exposed surfaces. Small, white lenticels. The eye is small to medium and partly open, set in a medium depth basin which is puckered. Thes tem is short and medium thickness, set in a medium deep, medium wide cavity which is lightly russeted.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured and crisp. Juicy, sweet, sprightly, honeyed flavour.
uses: A good fresh eating apple. Also makes excellent pies. It holds its shape well when cooked. Makes a sweet and fruity sauce.
origins: Developed at the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm in Excelsior, Minnesota (U.S.A.). Daniel's Red Duchess (a bud mutation of the Duchess of Oldenberg) crossed with Delicious. Released in 1964.
cultivation: Vigorous tree. Begins to bear fruit while young and does so annually. Very hardy
cold storage: Keeps three months in cold storage but the flesh can suffer deterioration close to the skin.
harvest: In the middle of the fourth period. The fruit tends to hang well into the harvest period.
