Red Canada

Red Canada
type: Dessert
synonyms: Bristol, Canada Redstreak, Red Winter, Steel's Red, Old Nonsuch, Richfield's Nonsuch
identification: Medium to large size, round to round conic shape, sometime lightly ribbed. Yellow base colour over which is a rich red overcolour marked with darker red stripes. Abundant, large tan spots are dispersed over the faces. The stem is slender, set in a wide and deep, russetted cavity. The calyx is small and usually closed, sometimes partly open, set in a narrow and shallow basin. Skin becomes greasy once the apples ripen.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, firm, fine grained. Juicy, full flavoured and aromatic.
origins: The origins of the Red Canada are somewhat obscure. It is generally accepted that the variety originated in the northeastern part of the United States of America, sometime in the early 1800s. Thatcher was the first to document it in 1822 under the synonym Nonsuch in his book "The American Orchardist" but provides only that it "is much esteemed in Massachusetts, for its good properties." Andrew Jackson Downing, in his "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of American" published in 1872, calls the Red Canada "An old fruit, formerly much grown in Connecticut and Massachesetts..."
cultivation: The trees are moderately vigorous, upright rounded. Biennial. Best grown in fertile sandy or gravelly soils.
cold storage: Up to five months.
harvest: Ready for harvest toward the end of the fifth period.
notes: The Roseau apple is also sometimes referred to as Canada Red. It is however not the same apple.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
cold storage weeks: 20
harvest period: 5
