identification: Medium to large size, round tending to round conic and slightly ribbed. The skin is smooth and yellow almost completely washed with a deep red except where shaded from the sun. At ripeness there is a pale blue bloom. Light-coloured lenticels show against the red wash. The eye is tight and small, partly open, set in a narrow and somewhat shallow basin which is ribbed and surround by an irregularly knobbed crown. The stem is short to medium length and slender, set in a somewhat shallow and wide, lightly russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white and frequently stained red. Fine textured, tender and soft. Juicy, brisk and slightly bitter.
uses: Picked slightly under-ripe, it is used for making pies and sauces but requires the addition of some sugar. For cider it is allowed to ripen fully.
origins: Originated along the lower Volga River of Astrakhan region of Russia in the early 1780s, according to André Leroy, "Dictionnaire de Pomologie" (published in 1875), and quickly became a favoured early apple through much of Europe and Scandinavia.
cultivation: Cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Precocious. Produces good crops but tends to produce biennially. Winter hardy but does best in areas of hot summers. The fruit tends to drop as soon as it is mature. The branches tend to be brittle under heavy load; best suited to espallier or trellis training.
cold storage: Does not store well, becoming mealy soon after harvest.
