summary: A relatively new apple developed in eastern Canada as a flavourful and crunchy, fresh-eating variety that is well suited to the region's growing conditions.
identification: Large tending to very large, oval shaped fruit, with faint ribbing on the faces and weak crowning at the calyx end.. The base colour is yellow over which can be a pink/almost red blush on the sun-exposed face, marked with abundant lenticels. The calyx is small tending to medium size, usually slightly pen and set in moderately deep on open basin. A slight bloom sometimes develops on the skin. The stem is medium stout and long, set in a somewhat stout, often russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, firm. Juicy and sweet. Tropical fruit flavours, raisins.
origins: Grown by in 1993 by Roland Joannin of La Pomme de Demain, St-Joseph du Lac, Quebec (Canada) from an open-pollinated seedling of NJ75. The pollen parent of this apple is unknown. It was selected from among 1,200 seedlings grown at the Verger Josée & Jacques in St-Joseph-du-Lac, Quebec (Canada) carried out under the La Pomme de demain program dedicated to the development of new apple varieties and released under the marketing name Passionata in 2015.
