Purpurroter Cousinot

  • Purpurroter Cousinot
  • Purpurroter Cousinot
type: Culinary, Dessert
synonyms: Badener Reinette, Blutapfel, Cousinot Rouge d’Hiver, Englische Buschelreinette, Purpurroter Winter Cousinot, Reinette Rouge, Weinachtsapfel, Winter Cousinot
identification: Medium to large. Round to round oblong. The base colour is yellow over which is an extensive dark red wash with darker striping and abundant, light-coloured lenticels. Highly glossy and somewhat thick skin. The calyx is medium to large and partly open, set in a medium deep and somewhat narrow basin. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep, narrow and russeted cavity. Some russetting develops around the stem cavity and onto the shoulders when the tree reaches maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured, often with red stains under the skin. Fine-grained. Somewhat dry, fruity, spicy and sweet.
uses: Dessert and culinary.
origins: Possibly originated in in France under the name Cousinotte d'Hiver, but generally accepted as having been originally cultivated in The Netherlands and northwestern Germany during the 1700s and perhaps earlier. It was first documented as such by German botanist Johann Hermann Knoop in the 1766 supplement to his "Pomologia" (published in 1758). Also described by Friedrich Adrian Diel in the 1813 edition of the "Versuch einer systematischen Beschreibung in Deutschland vorhandener Kernobstsorten" under the name Englische Buschelrenette and subsequently in the 1828 edition as Purpurroter Winter Cousinot. Somewhere along the line, however, the original Purpurroter Cousinot was replaced by a similar but somewhat different apple which has gone under that name since the early 1900s.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree with rounded, dense crown. Bears fruit on spurs. Does best in moderately rich, alkaline soil. Tolerant of windy conditions as well is higher elevations up to about 900 metres. Tolerates Hardiness Zone 4. Best suited to small orchards and u-pick operations.
cold storage: Up to four months.
vulnerabilities: Scab and canker can be a problem when grown in nutrient-poor soil.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle of the fifth period and peaks after about a month in storage.
notes: The Purpurroter Cousinot is a popular Christmas apple in Germany due to its deep red, glossy skin.
