identification: Medium size, oblate tending to conic but can sometimes be round and, on young trees, there is a strong tendancy to grow lopsided apples. The base skin colour is yellow almost completely washed with a glossy dark red. Marked with abundant, small, light?coloured and muted lenticels. The stem is short and stout, set in a moderately deep and wide, smooth cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, sometimes pale green. Coarse grained, firm and crisp. Juicy, , spicy and sprightly when first harvested. Mellows in storage to reach optimum flavour and texture after about a month. Keeps up to six months in cold storage.
uses: A good eating apple.
origins: Developed by Agriculture and Agri?Food Canada in St. Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec (Canada) in conjuction with PRI ( breeding cooperative involving Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Universities in the USA) and released in 1997. Graham 597NJ1
cultivation: Hardy, vigorous, spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Moderate annual production. Ready for harvest in the middle of the second period. Resistant to scab, but suscepti to rust and mildew. The fruit tends to hang even when ripe.
