Summary: An excellent American cooking apple discovered as a chance seedling in the early 1800s.

Identification: Large in size, round and sometimes conic. The skin is thin and smooth, greenish yellow with an orange blush and faintly striped on the sun-exposed face, occasionally red lenticels. The calyx is medium size and open, set in a shallow and moderately wide basin which is surrounded by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is about medium long and slender set in a lightly russetted cavity, medium deep and somewhat narrow.

Characteristics: The flesh is creamy yellow, fine-grained, tender and crisp. Juicy and sweet with a distinct aroma.

Uses: Can be eaten fresh, but its best quality is as a cooking apple. It retains its shape when cooked. Also a good canning apple. Great for jelly.

Origins: The chance seedling grew unnoticed in the garden of Reverend Samuel Porter in Shelbourne, Massachussets (U.S.A.) during the early 1800s, until it was found by a neighbour who appreciated its qualities and requested a few cuttings so that he might propagate it. Reverend Porter had no interest the tree or its apples and readily gave permission. From then on, the variety quickly grew in popularity, in part thanks to early ripening. It was described in Charles Mason Hovey's 1852 edition of The Fruits of America as "the very finest of our early fall apples."

Cultivation: Moderatedly vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. Produces heavy crops but has a biennial tendency. Fruit is often misshapen and often grows as two or three apples to a stem. Tree needs to be pruned regularly to maintain its shape.

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

Notes: It owes much of its popularity to a recommendation in Fanny Farmer’s Boston Cookbook as an excellent cooking apple, especially well suited for apple pies in flavour and consistency.
