summary: A firm sweet-tart fresh eating and cooking apple from the gardens of Versailles.
identification: Medium size and round-conic. Knobbed crown and sometimes angled faces. Smooth. The base colour is yellowish green, washed brownish red on the sun exposed face and marked with russet lenticels. The eye is medium size and partly open, set in a somewhat shallow, puckered basin. The stem is very short and stout, set in a medium depth, narrow and russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish white. Firm and somewaht dry. Sweet-sharp and flavourful.
uses: Dessert apple. Also favoured for apple sauce.
origins: Originally developed in the Indre and Loire regions of central France. It was grown in the gardens of France's Palace of Versailles for the king's table. Widely grown in central France.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Does best in light, loose soils.
