Öhringer Blutstreifling

identification: Small to medium size, round to round cylindric. Greenish yellow base colour is washed crimson and marked with darker striping. The skin has a waxy feel at maturity. The stem is short and stout, set in a wide cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, firm. Juicy, sweet and almost no acidity.
uses: Used as a fresh eating apple, as well as for juice and cider. When used for making cider, it needs to be blended with with sharp varieties.
origins: A chance seedling found in Öhringen, Hohenlohekreis (Germany) and first documented the Lucas in 1907. Extensively grown in the Baden-Wurtemberg region of Germany as well as in Switzerland during the 1900s.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous becoming weakly vigorous after first fruiting. Upright. Produces large harvests annually. Heavy pruning required during the formative years in order to achieve a reasonably wide crown.

vulnerabilities: Very susceptible to scab.
harvest: In the middle of the fifth period. Almost no fruit drop.
