Ohio Nonpareil
synonyms: Bellflower of the West, Cattall Apple, Cattell Apple, Myer’s Nonpareil, Nonpareil, Red Bellflower, Rusty Core, Wells
identification: Medium tending to large. Round. The base colour is greenish-yellow washed to more than half the surface with dark red over which is a striped pattern and scattered light coloured spots. The calyx is medium large and partly open, set in a somewhat deep and medium narrow basin which is often surrounded by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is medium length and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy and sweet, aromatic.
origins: First listed in the 1848, Volume XIV issue of "The Magazine of Horticulture," but likely originated half a century earlier near Massillon, Ohio (U.S.A.). In Charles Downing's 1872 update of A.J. Downing's "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America," he states "Its origin is in doubt, the first known trees of it being in the orchard of ____ Bowman in Massillon, Ohio."
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, but slow to start bearing fruit. Biennial.
harvest: Early in the fifth period.
notes: The name 'Ohio Nonpareil' is also used as a synonym for
Gravenstein , but it is not the same apple.
