summary: Bred as a supermarket variety, this Honeycrisp-type club apple produces annual crops ready for harvest early in the season.
identification: Medium tending to large, round to round-conic, sometimes long conic. Lightly ribbed faces. Smooth with a yellow base colour and extensively washed bright red over which are tan-coloured, raised lenticels. The calyx is partly closed and set in a shallow and somewhat narrow basin. The stem is medium long and medium stout, half of it inserted in a narrow and deep cavity, the other half extending proud of the shoulder.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, coarse-grained, and crunchy. Juicy, very sweet and sprightly. Similar to Honeycrisp.
uses: Suited to farm market and U-pic sales.
origins: Developed in 1998 as a cross of
Honeycrisp with pollen from
NY752 keep this version by Dr. Kevin Maloney and Dr. Susan Brown, who was, at the time, director of the apple breeding program for Cornell University at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York (U.S.A.). Under development for 14 years and released in 2010 with a planting of some 400 acres across test plots in various areas of New York State.
cultivation: Trees are medium size, upright and moderately vigorous. Precocious. Bears fruit on short spurs. Produces annual crops. Peak pollination five days after first bud-break.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to mildew and fire blight.
harvest: Ready for harvest in early mid-season.
notes: One of 69 varieties developed by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station under its apple breeding program which started in 1885. Other significant contributions that were released have been the Cortland, Macoun and Jonagold. The cultivar is governed by a licencing agreement with Cornell University.
