type: Cider, Eating, Pie, Sauce
identification: Medium tending to large, oblong and lightly ribbed. The skin base colour is greenish yellow, blushed dark red over half the apple, striped red on the shaded face.
characteristics: The flesh is lightly greenish, somewhat coarse in texture, firm and crisp. Juicy, sweet and slightly tart and aromatic.
uses: A good fresh eating apple, also excellent for pies and sauces, sometimes used in cider making.
origins: Developed by Dr. C.R. Ure for the Prairie Fruit Breeding Cooperative at Agriculture Canada's Morden Research Station in Morden, Manitoba (Canada) by crossing Rescue with pollen from Red Melba . Introduced in 1979.
cultivation: Very cold hardy, moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. A naturally dwarfing tree that rarely grows 15 feet. Starts to bear fruit at three years on its own roots, sometimes four years, and produces annually.
cold storage: Keeps up to two months in cold storage, but for this purpose the apples should be picked before they ripen fully. Fruit drops when ripe.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to blight and, in wet weather, to scab.
harvest: Ready for harvest starting early in the fourth period.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
