identification: Medium size. Round to square oblong. The base colour is greenish yellow washed with dark red and marked with orange or red stripes. Dotted with an abundance of light-coloured lenticels. A light bloom develops on the skin at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, stained greenish next to the skin. Coarse-grained, firm and juicy. Somewhat sweet-tart. Aromatic.
uses: Fresh eating and baking. Apple sauce. Cider.
origins: Believed to have originated in the 1700s with the Cherokee natives on Nickajack Creek, Macon County, North Carolina (U.S.A.). First documented in 1853 by pomologist and nurseryman Silas McDowell of Franklin, North Carolina.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears annual fruit. Does best on clay soils. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 5 to 9
