Newell's Winter

identification: Medium tending to large. round-conic. The base colour is yellow over which are reddish, sometimes bronze blushes and marked with abundant, large, russet lenticels. The stem is short and stout, set in a somewhat shallow and wide cavity. The calyx is small and closed, set in a wide and shallow, pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, coarse-grained and crisp. Juicy, sprightly and flavourful.
origins: Found as a chance seedling growing next to a perrry Russet tree in Sauk County, Wisconsin (U.S.A.), during the mid-1800s. Introduced by J.W, Shoards of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Described in the 1897 "Transactions of the Illinois State Horticultural Society."
cultivation: Precocious. Produces heavy crops.
