origins: When Hurricane Camille raged its way inland in 1969 i lay a swath of devastation through the southeastern United States. In its way was the orchard of Clyde and Frances Ginger Harvey of Nelson County,Virginia (USA). In the cour of their recovery efforts, Harvey came across a chance seedl growing at the edge of what had been a plot of Winesap apple trees. Replanted in the recovered orchard, it was found to ripen exceptionally early and bear golden fruit. Introduced 1989, it was initially called Harveylicious but later redubbed—Ginger for Clyde Harvey’s wife and Gold for its striking colour. It is thought that the seed was washed in f parts unknown by the floods caused by the hurricane, possibl a cross of Golden Delicious and Albermarle Pippin.
