identification: Medium size and round conic to conic shape with ribbing around the calyx basin. The skin is glossy with a greenish yellow base colour over which are dull red streaks and flushes.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine textured, firm and crisp. Juicy, sweet and lightly tart.
uses: Used mostly for cooking and baking, but it can also be eaten fresh.
origins: New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, New York (U.S.A.). Ulysses Hedrick, then horticulturalist at the institute and later its director, cross-pollinated Jonathan with Rome Beauty in 1910. The new variety underwent 39 years of development before it was finally released in 1949.
cultivation: Hardy, vigorous, upright spreading tree. Starts to bear fruit quit young and tends to produce good crops annually.
cold storage: Keeps up to three months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Highly susceptible to scab and mildew and moderately susceptible to blight.
harvest: Ready for harvest early in the fourth period. Fruit holds well on the tree at maturity.
