identification: Medium size. Conic. The base colour is greenish yellow, flushed bright red and striped. The skin develops a greasy feel.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish, firm, fine-grained. Mildly sweet and aromatic.
origins: Raised by Mr. Tampling of Malpas near Newport in South Wales (U.K.). Marketed by his sister Cissy. In 1902, presented as Tamplin, it received an Award of Merit from London's Royal Horticultural Society.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Produces heavy crops.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to bitter pit.
