Melcombe Russet
type: Dessert, Juice
identification: Small, round and flattened. The skin base colour is yellowish gold which may be blushed orange on the sun exposed face and entirely covered with a cinnamon-coloured russet. The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a shallow and wide, slightly pleated basin which is surrounded by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is very short and stout, set in a narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, soft. A touch dry and tangy, pineaple flavour.
uses: A fresh eating russet apple.
origins: Grown in the 1800s at Melcombe Bingham in Dorsetshire (U.K.). Listed by Robert Hogg In the 1876 edition, Volume XXX, of "The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener and Country Gentleman" and subsequently described in the 1884 edition of his "The Fruit Manual" with the comment "A second-rate dessert apple, which keeps well till January."
