synonyms: Originally known as Cultivar MC-38 but trademarked and marketed as Crimson Snow. Sometimes referred to as Snow, but this name is most commonly used to refer to the Snow Apple or Fameuse.
identification: Medium to large, cylindrical. The skin colour is yellow green over which is a solid wash of red with darker stripes. Thick and glossy skin which does not become waxy during storage. No russeting. Lenticels are sparse, fairly large and cream white in colour. The stem is long and medium stout, usually green with red stripes and set in a deep, medium wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, moderately juicy, sweet-tart and mildly aromatic with a full-bodied flavour. Slow to brown on exposure to air.
origins: This was a chance seedling found by Allan McLean in a large block of
Cripps Pink apple trees near Harcourt (Australia) in 1999. The seed parent was likely a Cripps Pink, while it not known what the pollen parent might have been. It was tested by grafting and, once found to bear true to kind, a patent was applied for under the name MC38 and the cultivar was subsequently trademarked as Crimson Snow.
