synonyms: Skeet Apples
identification: Medium to large size, round tending to conic and often irregular in shape. Green maturing to yellowish and washed dull purple. Abundant white lenticels, some with russet. The stem is moderately long and slender, set in a deep cavity. The calyx is open, set in a wide, shallow, ribbed basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish. Firm, dense and hard when first picked, mellowing in storage without losing their firmness.
origins: Found growing as a wild seedling near Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde County, North Carolina (U.S.A.) during the mid-1800s. Legend has it that the seed was taken from the gizzard of a wild goose by the Mattamuskeet Indians
cultivation: Vigorous. Does best in rich, loamy soils.
cold storage: Stores exceptionally well, with or without refrigeration. Said to have been kept three years in storage.
vulnerabilities: Prone to cedar apple rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the sixth period. Fruit holds well on the tree even beyond ripeness.
