type: Dessert
summary: This moderately large, bright red apple was bred for genetic resistance to scab.
identification: Medium size, round-flattened apple. Smooth skin with little or no bloom, some waxiness. The base colour is cream cream coloured over which is a dark-ed wash covering most of the apple. Marked with abundant, small, tan-coloured lenticels. The stem is somewhat short and medium-stout, set in a wide and medium deep cavity. The calyx basin is medium deep and wide with fine, upright calyx leaves.
characteristics: The flesh is pale cream-coloured, sometimes with reddish veins around the core. Soft and fine grained. Resists browning when exposed to air.
origins: Developed in 1974 from an experimental variety listed as S21-42-69 as the flower parent and pollen from Empire by David Crowe and Charles G. Embree at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada station in Kentville, Nova Scotia (Canada). Selected in1989. Of interest is the process by which the cultivar was processed: the pollen from the Empire was collected the year prior to use and dried for subsequent use. The flower of the seed parent was emasculated at full bloom and successfully pollinated with the dehydrated pollen from an experimental cultivar designated S21-42-69. The selection of the resulting seedling was made on the basis scab resistance, eating quality and the rich, red colouration of the ripe fruit.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Upright spreading. Sets fruit on spurs. Provides crops annually.
vulnerabilities: Resistance to apple scab.
harvest: Ready for harvest around the middle of the fifth period. Mid-late.
