identification: Medium to large. Round conic. Bright yellow base colour over which is a bright red wash covering three quarters of the surface. Broken stripes can be seen where th red wash is not as intense. Character of the
origins: The variety developed in the Biscay region of northern Spain. In the late 1490s, it came to the notice of Marin Onffroy (Senior) on his way back to Normandy from the Crusades. He subsequently established the seigneurie of Saint Laurent?Sur? Mer where he cultivated and propogated the apple in his orchard. From there, it spread through the Normandy region, becoming one of the more highly regarded cider varieties of Normandy.
