synonyms: Fail-Me-Never, Margill, Munches Pippin, Neverfail, Small Pabston, Small Ribston, Reinette Musquée.
identification: Small, ocassionally medium, in size. Round and sometimes irregular in shape, often appears to be five?sided and the crown has five prominent ridges. The skin is greenish tending to faint orange, mottled and streaked with red, orange and brown with patches of red on the sun exposed side. Flushed face usually has patches of russet.The stem is short to medium length and slender, set in a deep funnel shaped, russeted cavity.
characteristics: Yellowish flesh is firm and very sweet, wonderfully aromatic.
uses: A highly regarded dessert apple in Victorian England and still widely cultivated today.
origins: This cultivar is reported to have been brought from the Gardens of Versailles in France in 1680s by Sir William Temple and subsequently planted in his garden in Surrey. According to Robert Hogg (The Fruit Manual, 1884) it was one of the varieties offered by Kensington s Brompton Park Nurse in the mid?1700s. Hogg also suggests that it may have been brought to the UK by George London who worked for some time at the Gardens of Versailles before returning to Englan where he became a partner in the Brompton Park Nursery. Perhaps a seedling of Ribston Pippin which it resembles.
cold storage: It keeps well in storage but the skin acquires a greasy feel. Keeps for up to three months in cold storage but the skin develops a greasy feel.
