identification: Large apples, flat at the bottom. Green with a faint red blush on the sun exposed face with scattered red stripes. The eye is moderately large and more than half open, set in a deep and pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy, fine-grained, juicy and sweet-sharp. Mellows to a sweet-sharp in storage.
uses: Early harvests produce good cooking apples, fairly sweet and retain their shape for pies when sliced. Bountifuls harvested later in the season make good eating apples, particularly if they’ve been allowed to mature in storage.
origins: Bred in 1964 by Dr. Frank Alston at the East Malling Research Station in Kent, England, using Cox's Orange Pippin pollinated by Lane's Prince Albert. Introduced by Highfield Nurseries of Gloucestershire in 1985.
cultivation: Easy to grow, moderately vigorous, spur bearer. Precocious. Likes dry areas. Produces heavy crops which ripe from the middle of the first period to the start of the thir This is a good choice for anyone who wants a low maintenance tree which requires little or no pruning.
