summary: It is good eaten fresh, but also good in pies and makes great dried apple slices.
identification: Medium to large in size, distinctly conical, and ribbed. Smooth skin colour is golden yellow, often with patches of red on the sun exposure.Numerous light coloured dots.
characteristics: Flesh is dense, tending to dry, sweet, pear flavour.
origins: Apparently grown by Laban Rollins in Orange County, Vermont, in the mid-1800s and named for one of his daughters. In 1858 it was introduced to Minnesota by his eldest son, Irvin Rollins, who had decided to homestead near Plainview where it became popular because of its taste and hardiness. Hard to find in commercial orchards by the mid-1970s.
progeny: While the Malinda itself has largely fallen out of favour, it has been used extensively in the University of Minnesota s breeding program to create varieties including Beacon, Haralson, Folwell, Minnehaha
