identification: Large size, round, sometimes slightly flattened and can be irregular in shape. The skin is smooth and and yellow in base colour over which are deep red flushes and stripes. An abundance of russet spots. The stalk is short and stout.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish yellow with light green marbling. Breaks crisply, is juicy, and aromatic. Softly astringent, Low acidity.
uses: Good bittersweet apple for blending cider. Considered vintage quality.
origins: northumberland County Pennsylvania. Mentioned in 1867 issue of Horticulture. South Devon UK
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading. Biennial. Bears heavy crops. Requires little or no pruning.
