summary: This sweet, bi-coloured market apple was created by crossing Honeycrisp and Fuji. Looks like a Fuji but crunches like a Honeycrisp. Hardy and long storage.
identification: Large, round-cylindrical. The base colour is pale reddish tan over which is a pattern of red-orange striping. The stem cavity is russetted, extending out over the shoulder with a tendency to develop cracks. Medium to large tan lenticels. Moderately crowned at calyx basin. The stem is medium length and moderately stout, set in a deep and moderately wide cavity. The calyx basin is deep and moderately wide.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, very crunchy. Very sweet and juicy.
origins: A cross of Honeycrisp and Fuji , Developed by Mitch Lynd of Lynd Fruit Farms in Patakasia, Ohio (U.S.A.) in 1998. First fruited in 2008. Patented in 2014 and first appeared in stores in 2017 under the Midwest Apple Improvement Association name (hence the name MAIA) of Wabash, Indiana (U.S.A.)
cultivation: Round spreading shape. Medium to low vigor. Spur bearer. Produces moderate annual crops. Regular thinning is necessary to prevent the tree from becoming bushy.
cold storage: Performs best in regular cold room, gathering additional sugars for three months and maintaining its freshness for a total of six months.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to, powdery mildew and scab. Minimal resistance to fire blight.
