identification: Small to medium size and round shape. The skin is washed mahogany with white lenticels over 90% of its surface
characteristics: Flesh is yellow, crisp firm, juicy. Sweet, but very hard.
origins: Found as a chance seedling in 1850 on the farm of John Lowry in Afton, Virginia.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Grows aggressively for the first 15 years, then slows down. Biennial with heavy crops during the producing years. Grows best at higher elevations.
mutations: Red Lowry
cold storage: Does not keep well. Turns mealy very quickly.
harvest: Ready for harvest during the latter half of the fifth period.
notes: There is some confusion over whether the Lowry apple is actually the same as the Lowre Queen which was grown in the state of Virginia during the late 1700s and into the 1800s.
ploidism: Diploid Self sterile.
