Lord's Seedling
identification: Medium tending to large. Yellow and almost completely covered with a russet network.
characteristics: The flesh is ?????, dense. NuttyAromatic. Does not keep well.
origins: Found as a seedling tree by James Lord in his orchard near Linden, New York (USA) and submitted to the New York Experimental Station in 1892. According to George H. Howe, who co?authored The Fruits of New York series with U.P. Hedrick, that it “is one of the most aromatic, deliciously flavored apples I know. Since it grew surrounded by Baldwin it is likely that this is the female parent, but where the p might have come from is anyone s guess.
cultivation: Weakly vigorous and, while it bears surprisingly heavy crops annually, its appearrance and the nature of the tree make this an unlikely commercial variety, more suited t backyard orchards and farmgate sales. Ready for harvest in t last half of the THIRD period. Winter hardy.
