Laxton’s Epicure

synonyms: Epicure, Epicurian, Laxton’s Epicurian. The term Epicurian actually refers to a mutation of the Epicure.
identification: Small tending to medium size. Round conic.The waxy, greenish-yellow skin is almost completely covered with orange red blushes and a pattern of broken red stripes. The calyx is moderately large, and set in a shallow, lightly puckered basin.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured, fine-grained and crisp. Juicy, sweet and aromatic.
uses: Best eaten fresh since the Epicure does not store well.
origins: Developed by Laxton Brothers Nursery of Bedford in 1909 by crossing Worcester Pearmain with Wealthy. It was introduced in 1929 and received the RHS Award of Merit in 1931.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. Precocious. Produces heavy crops but tends to be biennial. The blossoms are tolerant of frost..
mutations: Epicurean is a more highly coloured sport.
