identification: Medium size, round to round-conic with pronounced ribbing. The background colour of the skin is pale yellow washed with a light red blush and darker streaks. Thin skinned. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity. The calyx is large and open, set in a deep and wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, crisp and juicy. Sprightly. Very aromatic.
uses: Ranked as one of the top North American dessert apples.
origins: Originated in the early 1800s in Cayuga County, New York (U.S.A.) and first documented by J.J. Thomas in the August, 1848 issue of "The Cultivator" in its "New and Newly Introduced Apples" section. No clues to its parentage.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Precocious. Tends to produce heavy, biennial crops. Requires fruit thinning to for size. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
cold storage: Keeps four months in cold storage.
harvest: Ripens progressively over a period of six weeks starting in the first half of the fourth period to provide fresh fruit on a sustained basis.
notes: This cultivar is strikingly similar to the Canadian Strawberry and may be one and the same.
