synonyms: Known as Landsberg and also as Reneta Gorzowska. Often referred to as "Surprise" (several other apples also use this name, either as the cultivar name or regional synonym). Please see Surprise and Surprise Reinette .
summary: Medium size to small, glossy, soft-fleshed, Type 2 apple. Developed in Northern Germany. Juicy, mildly sweet and resistant to most diseases.
identification: Small, tending to medium size. Round-flattened. The glossy skin is pale yellow with a reddish-orange blush on the sun-exposed face. The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a moderately deep basin, surrounded by a vaguely knobbed crown. The peduncle is medium long and slender, set in a deep and narrow, russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, moderately firm and melting. Juicy and sweet.
uses: An excellent dessert apple, also good for cooking.
origins: Raised from a pip in the early 1800s by Justice of the Peace Burchardt in what was at the time a part of northern Germany (now Poland). First described in print by Sybold Berghuis in his "Nerderlandische Boomgard." Also published simultaneously in English as "The Dutch Horticulturist" (1868).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Spur bearer. Precocious. Bears best crops every other year. Lends itself well to trellising.
cold storage: Keeps up to three months, becoming mealy toward the end.
vulnerabilities: Sensitive to scab in damp areas. Also somewhat sensitive to canker.
harvest: In the middle period.
notes: It is said to be very firmly attached to the tree, thus withstanding autumnal gales.
