synonyms: Sometimes Langley Pippin, but this is name is actually used for a cultivar of that name. The name also serves as a synonym for
Northern Greening .
identification: Large, conic. The base colour is yellowish green, over which is an red wash and a loose pattern of darker stripes covering the sun-exposed faces. The calyx is partly open and large, set in a shallow and narrow basin. The stem is medium long and slender set in a deep and open cavity which has some green russet extending out onto the shoulder. Becomes somewhat greasy at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish, coarse-grained and soft. Moderately sharp but mellows to a sweet, tender apple after about six weeks in storage.

origins: Raised from a pippin of
Northern Greening in 1866 by Joseph Lamb, head gardener at Meynell Langley in Derbyshire (U.K.). There is no record of the pollen parent.
