identification: Medium size tending to large, Round?conic, but often irregular. Faintly ribbed and often uneven in shape. The skin is greenish yellow with a faint pink blush and red broken stripes on the sun exposed face. The eye is small and closed set in a shallow, open and lightly puckered basin. The stem is short, stout and set in a moderately deep and narrow basin.
characteristics: Flesh is white, somewhat dry and soft. Very sweet. Otherwise bland. Keeps two months in cold storage.
origins: Arose in Novgorod Province, Russia. First described 1855. Received RHS Award of Merit 1896. Originated in Russia. It was described in 1855. Awarded the Award of Merit from the RHS in 1896 under its synonym name ’Cardinal’
cultivation: Small and weakly vigorous, upright spreading, spur bearer. Hardy and frost resistant. Ready for harvest startin the beginning of the SECOND period over a span of two months, but tends to bear best every other year.
