Kentucky Summer King
synonyms: Kentucky Summer Queen, August Apple. The apple is also sometimes referred to as King which is more commonly used for the King of Tompkins County.
identification: Medium, sometimes large. The skin is green maturing to yellow and covered with red blushes and stripes.
characteristics: Yellowish flesh is tender, fine?grained and juicy.
origins: brought into Kentucky from North Carolina in the early 1800’s. It became known as King in Kentucky and was an important commercial variety there around 1850. Once considered to be extinct, it was rediscovered in 1986 by app collector Joyce Neighbors of Alabama
ploidism: Diploid. Partly self fertile.
