type: Dessert
identification: Small tending to medium. Round tending to conic with pronounced angular faces. The base colour is yellowish. Abundant russet lenticels. The stem is long and slender, set in a wide and deep cavity. The calyx is small and closed, set in a shallow, ridged basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white. Tender and crisp. Sweet and slightly tart, aromatic and flavourful.
origins: A wild seedling found by a Amish settler by the name of Kreutz while clearing overgrown land he had purchased in Albany Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (U.S.A.), possibly a seedling from one of several apple trees grown on the property earlier in the 1700s. In 1790s, Kreutz shared cuttings from this tree with George deB. Keim, one of the Amish families who settled in Oley Valley of Berks County, Pennsylvania (U.S.A.) during the early 1800s and it became widely known as Keim's apples. Listed in A.J. Downing's 1859 edition of "The Fruit and Fruit Trees of America" though not in the 1845 edition.
