Kansas Queen

Kansas Queen
type: Dessert
synonyms: Known as Nouvelle Europe in Europe
identification: Medium to large size. Round-conic. The base colour is golden yellow which is almost completely washed with deep red over-colour. The calyx is large and closed, set in a shallow, wide and heavily puckered basin. Abundant small russet lenticels. The stem is slender, moderately long and set in a moderately deep, funnel shaped cavity which is usually russetted. The skin becomes very greasy at maturity and in storage.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained and crisp. Juicy and aromatic, slight sweet-tart.
origins: According to Dr. Stayman of Leavensworth, Kansas (U.S.A.) in the 1869 issue of the "Gardener's Monthly," the Kansas Queen stems from "A seedling raised by Burrell Atkinson, of this place, from a seed of the Ben Davis planted in 1858, bore fruit last year (1866)." The only uncertainty is in the parentage of the seedling. At the time B. Atkinson planted two open-pollinated seedlings, one that of the Ben Davis, the other from a Bellflower. All indications based on the apple and the tree are that this is not a Bellflower seedling but rather from the Ben Davis. Nevertheless, the question stands.
cultivation: Vigorous. Hardy and productive.
cold storage: Keeps less than one month is storage.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the third period.
pollination group: E
pollination peak: 17
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
