identification: Medium to large size fruit. Round tending to round conic and lightly ribbed. Base colour is yellowish, but often green when the tree is grown in cooler climates. Marked with a bright, red over-colour on the sun-exposed faces. The stem is short and set in a deep, russetted cavity. The calyx is closed and varies from small to large, set in a narrow, pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish, coarse grained and firm. Juicy and sweet with a hint of tartness.
origins: Illinois Horticultural Society Report 1869 "Dr. Warder said KK was Stark. See IllH1869:315" Listed in the 1876 annual report of the Kansas State Horticultural Society, suggesting improprieties in the naming of this apple. "We have not space here to notice more than a few of such cases," Dr. William Howsley stated. "The first is that of our own State society in calling a fine winter apple the Kansas Keeper when it was known to be some old variety, but the kind not recognized. This apple was obtained from the Ham Bros.' nursery, and of course were grafted trees, consequently could not have originated in Kansas in 1855."
