synonyms: Franz Joseph, Francis Joseph, François Joseph, Kaiserin Elizabeth. Not to be confused with an apple sometimes call Franz Joseph which is actually a shortening of Franz Joseph von Eggers Reinette (see Osnabrucker Reinette ).
identification: Medium size. Conic. Sharply angular terminating in a pronounced and irregularly knobbed crown. Yellow with pink red flushes on the sun exposed faces. The eye is partly open and large, set in a deep basin. The stem is short, moderately stout and set in a funnel shaped, lightly russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, tender and fine grained. Juicy and sweet, flavourful and aromatic.

origins: Germany. Known before 1876.
