origins: First described by American pomologist William Coxe as Kaighn's Spitzemberg in the 1817 edition of “A View of the Cultivation of Fruit Trees and the Management of Orchards and Cider” as being “a beautiful early winter fruit, highly deserving of propagation.” He further stated that “its name is derived from a family residing in Gloucester County, New Jersey, where it was first cultivated.” The variety spread quickly from the east coast to the west coast but went into a decline in the early 1900s and has become hard to find. There seems to be no record of its parentage.
