synonyms: June Sweetner, Red June Sweet. Possibly also Striped Red Harvest and Striped Sweet Harvest.
identification: Medium tending to smaller, round and oblate. The skin is pale green over which are extensive flushes of dull red and marked with small, light coloured lenticels. The calyx is open, set in a deep basin. The stem is short, sometimes medium length, stout and set in a deep and narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained, tender and not overly juicy. Rich tasting and sweet.
origins: There exists little or no information on its origins, but was thought to have come from the Pennsylvania area of the eastern U.S.A. where it was extensively grown in the second half of the 1800s.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the second period, sometimes the start of the third.
notes: Listed as Red June Sweet with the synonyms Striped Red Harvest, Striped Sweet Harvest and June Sweeting attributed to it in Charles Downing's 1871 update of "Fruits and Fruit Trees of America." He stated "Origin unknown, but has been cultivated in some localities in Pennsylvania for many years, and is there prized as the best early sweet Apple they grow."
