summary: Early season, sweet apple apple, quite scarce but still offered by a few select nurseries in the eastern United States, thanks to recovery efforts carried out in the early 2000s.
identification: Small to medium size. Base colour is yellow over which are pale and darker red stripes.
characteristics: The flesh is tender, juicy and very sweet.
origins: Thought to have originated in West Virginia (U.S.A). According to the late Lee Calhoun in his book "Old Southern Apples" (published in 2010) the apple was offered by the J. Van Lindley Nursery in Greensboro North Carolina (U.S.A.) during the late 1893. Was considered lost, but an old tree was found by fruit explorer Carlos Manning of Lester, West Virginia.
