summary: This Canadian apple had a lot going for it. It was winter hardy, it was ready for harvest mid-season and it kept in storage for months. And, in addition to tasting good, it was highly regarded for cider, adding sharpness to the blend. Unfortunately, it is no longer widely available.
identification: Medium size, round. The base colour is yellowish over which is a reddish blush and marked with sparse, greyish lenticels. The stem is somewhat short and stout, set in a shallow and wide cavity. The calyx is large and closed, set in a shallow basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained and crunchy. Medium juicy, mildly sweet-tart.
uses: Dessert and often used for making hard cider.
origins: Described briefly in the 1895 annual report of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, this apple was grown by F. Jordan, the pharmacist in Goderich, Ontario (Canada) at the time.
cold storage: Keeps four months or more in cold storage. Gathers sweetness and flavour in storage.
