identification: Small to medium and round. The skin is thin and waxy with a base colour of yellow which is almost completely washed with a dark red flush and darker stripes. Russetted in the stem cavity. Becomes very greasy as it ripens.
characteristics: Flesh is yellowish. Fine grained, tender, crisp. Very juicy and sweet with a touch of sprightliness. Pear flavour. Aromatic.
origins: Arose as a chance seedling in the early 1830s on the farm of Isaac Jefferies at Newlin Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania (U.S.A.).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Precocious. Bears fruit on spurs. Biennial.

vulnerabilities: Very resistant to scab and powdery mildew. Prone to codling moth infestation.
