summary: Very old variety grown mainly Central Europe.
identification: Medium tending to small size. Conic to long conic, often lopsided. Base colour is yellow, blushed red on the sun exposed faces. Develops a waxy film at maturity and in storage. Red stripes are present in some of the regional variations. The stem is stout and variable in length and set in a narrow, deep and lightly russetted cavity. The calyx is variable and set in a heavily ribbed basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white. Tender. Juicy and sweet-tart with a spicy flavour. Tends to brown when exposed to air.
uses: Eaten fresh, makes and excellent jelly. Also used to make cider and distilled into fruit spirits.
origins: A chance seedling cultivated in the Wallachia, Eastern Moravia and Silesia regions of Central Europe. First documented in 1740.
cultivation: Vigorous. Grows quite straight to develops a high, spherical crown, then becomes less vigorous. Needs more than 12 years to begin fruiting on its own roots. Partial spur bearer. Biennial. Frost tolerant. Grows well in damp soils and humid climates. Not suitable for intensive cultivation, needs air.
cold storage: Keeps four months.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab. powdery mildew.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the fourth period and into the first half of the fifth.
