Improved Golden Delicious
type: Dessert
synonyms: Gibson, Improved Golden. Sometimes referred to as Smoothee Improved Golden Delicious. A variety of names is considered acceptable since the plant patent of it has expired.
summary: A limb mutation of Golden Delicious
identification: Slightly conic, base colour greenish yellow over which is a reddish blush with a slightly waxy skin. The stem is long, medium thick and lightly clubbed at the end, set in a deep slightly russeted cavity. The eye is open and set in a wide, moderately deep basin. Larger, firmer, less russet. Small lenticels
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine grained, crisp and juicy. Pick it when it has fully ripened.
uses: Holds its shape well for baking.
origins: Found growing as a limb mutation at the orchards of Dan Simmons (Peace Valley Orchards) near Rogers, Ohio (U.S.A.) in the late 1980s.
cultivation: Self fertile. Less prone to be biennial. Semi spur bearer.
harvest: Ready for harvest early in the fourth period.
notes: Like its forbearer, the Improved Golden needs to be fully ripened and stored for only a short while to produce the best flavours and sugar content. That, unfortunately, is not how the apple is usually treated and the quality of the apple suffers as a result.
pollination peak: 14
ploidism: Self sterile.
hardiness: 4
