Huvitus

Huvitus
type: Dessert
identification: Small tending to medium size, round to round conic. The base colour is a yellowish tan over which is a dense pattern of broken red stripes that cover all or most of the surface. The skin is somewhat thick. The stem is long and medium stout, set in a shallow, funnel-shaped cavity. The calyx is moderately large and partly open, set in a wide, corrugated and shallow basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white with red stains under the skin and in the interior veining. Fine-grained, tender. Juicy and sweet-tart
origins: The Huvitus originated from a packet of pips received by Juho Korpela from Carl Reinhold Sahlberg's orchard in Yläne (Finland). In 1895, Korpela planted the pips in his garden and one of the resulting seedlings developed into what became known as the Huvitus apple, remarkable for its winter hardiness and named in honour of the orchard from which the seed originated. In the early 1940s, several trees of this variety were planted in the orchard of the Agricultural Experimental Centre's Institute of Horticulture at Piikkiö Yltöis and, starting in 1958, it was included in the institute's breeding program aimed at developing a Finnish variety of apples that combined the winter hardiness of Huvitus with the quality of foreign apples. Of the 16 apple varieties resulting from the program, 11 of them are crosses with Huvitus as either the flower- or pollen-parent.
cultivation: precocious.
progeny: Pirja
cold storage: Keeps about a month, often slightly more.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the third period.
notes: The apples can be picked as much as three weeks prior to ripeness for a somewhat more tart eating apple.
