synonyms: Huntsman's Favorite
identification: Large, sometimes very large, round tending to oblong and irregular. The skin is smooth and rich yellow with large, dark, raised lenticels and a blush of orange on the sun-exposed face. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep and wide cavity which is often russetted. The calyx is small, closed and set in a medium deep, wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, tender, coarse-grained. Juicy and aromatic.
origins: Originated as a chance seedling in the mid-1800s on the farm of John Huntsman of Fayette, Missouri (U.S.A.). It was widely grown throughout that state as well as in nearby Kansas.
cultivation: Upright spreading tree with long, slender branches. Slow to start producing fruit, but when it does, it produces good crops on an annual basis.
cold storage: Keeps a month in storage.
vulnerabilities: Prone to scab in damp or humid surroundings. Also susceptible to fire blight when grown in dry conditions.
harvest: Ready for harvest early in the fifth period.
