Hunthouse
synonyms: Large Hunthouse, Hunt House
identification: Medium size, conical. Ribbed on the sides and prominent knobs at the apex. The skin base colour is green maturing to greenish yellow. Blushed red with darker broken streaks on the sun exposed face. Russet veins on the shaded face. Sparse russet lenticels. The stalk is medium long set in a very shallow cavity. Usually there is a fleshy swelling to the side of the stalk, but there are sometimes two swellings.
characteristics: The flesh is white, firm and quite tart. Keeps in storage for about three months.

origins: Discovered at Whitby, in Yorkshire, where it is extensively cultivated
cultivation: Small tree with a weeping growth habit. Bears heavy crops annually.
notes: This apple was often carried on the old sailing ships because it can be kept for many months with minimal storage. Captain Cook was said to have had them on board when he explored the New World.
