identification: Medium to very large. Round. The base colour is yellow over which are red stripes.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured. and firm. Juicy, sweet-sharp.
origins: Developed in 1970 at the Aomori Apple Experiment Station in Japan in 1970 and introduced in 1983. It was reported as a cross of Fuji and Mutsu, but genetic research carried out since its release indicates that the pollen parent was in fact not Mutsu, but rather an unknown cultivar.
cultivation: Needs good sun exposure to colour properly. Problems:Tends to develop water core when fully ripe, also some tendancy to develop core rot. Ready for harvest late in the FOURTH period. Concurrent with Jonagold and Golden Delicious
cold storage: Keeps up to six months in storage.
vulnerabilities: Prone to water core. High incidence of core rot.
harvest: Late in the fifth period.
notes: A Hokuto weighing 1.849 kilograms was found growing near Hirosaki City (Japan) in 2005. It still stands as the h apple in the Guinness World Records., Originated from the Aomori Apple Experiment Station. From the cross of Fuji x Mutsu
